Very large Arapaho Beaded Hide Umbilical Fetish, c. 1880. In the form of a turtle, beaded on one side with the legs and tail with geometric designs. Tin cones on legs and tail, sewn with sinew, lg. 10 in.
The Arapaho used Umbilical cord fetishes to hold the child's navel cord. They hung the fetish from their cradleboard or attached them to children's clothing. The fetish protected the child from evil influences.
